Aderlating - dying of the light

EP.
Jan 2010
FREE DOWNLOAD ONLY: http://www.archive.org/details/dying_of_the_light

Aderlating is a project of Mories, the disturbed, twisted artist behind the overwhelming ‘Gnaw Their Tongues’ and ‘De Magia Veterum’. He has always been one to take extreme music to a new level with an exceptional catalog or original and diverse releases. So, when I heard about this project, I decided to check it out as soon as I could and try to keep my expectations as low as possible lest I be disappointed. But surely, Mories could do no wrong…right? RIGHT. What we have here is Mories delving into a gruesome and corrosive atmosphere with Aderlating playing a mixture of Black Noise, drone and black metal thrown in to create an oppressive environment of torture and vengeance.

The sound here is murky. Murky to the point where you feel its been submerged in a never-ending pit of murkiness, creating a pulse of ugly black noise. Buzzing black metal guitars are submerged into the blurred landscapes. You will find some heavy distorted bass which gives a harsh discordant, noisy tone. The drums are primitive and drive the music brilliantly. There is a section in the second song ‘Soul Harvest’ in which all you can hear is some dark ambiance, slow plodding riffs but fast and bizarre drums. Sounds peculiar and very different and pretty much depicts the madness of the artist. The vocals range from high torturous screams to some mysterious chanting and outright creepy voices. They complement the claustrophobic and the torturous sound of the music perfectly and at times, even add a sense of dread to the overall sound. The synths are stunning. Depicting pain and torture, they are used to awaken fear, psychosis and the agony that has been lodged deep beneath the human soul.

The music here is aimed at total emotional obliteration. You are immediately transported into the mind of a maniacal, unstable individual devoid of reason or logic. You can experience a plethora of emotions ranging from fear to misery. It grabs the attention of the listener. There is never a moment when the listener would be able to draw his breath over a long period of time. Never a moment where he would be calm. This is the total darkness. Highly recommended to people who like chaotic black metal, noise or dark ambient music.

Squash Bowels - Grindvirus

Full Length, Willowtip Records
October 22nd, 2009

Polish grindgods Squash Bowels returned to action with their 5th studio full length entitled as ''Grindvirus'' which was released in October 2009 on Willowtip Records. The band has been emanating nauseous fumes of goregrind mayhem since the past 15 years now and have developed a cult following of dedicated grind freaks from all over the globe. Them along with Dead Infection are undoubtedly the two best offerings from the Polish underground scene.

At the time of their inception, the band played an unadulterated brand of old school grindgore with influences ranging from Napalm Death and Carcass but with the progress of time and certain line-up changes, their sound has evolved into a dexterous and upstanding version of awe-inspiring grindcore.

These days when you have zillions of bands coming up with tasteless and redundant sounding records,  its great to see old bands like Squash Bowels still quenching the thirst for true grindcore with albums like Grindvirus. Going down the memory lane, we have had some spectacular SB releases like ''No Mercy'', ''The Mass Rotting, The Mass Sickening'' and ''Love Songs''; all of them adequately spiced with groove and relentless cacophonies but the new one is a tad different and a step forward from all these above mentions.

The band followed a staunch goregrind decorum by incorporating your typical pitch shifted gurgles, snarls, ample groove and crushing blasts until their previous album ''No Mercy'' but they have seemed to explore a newer horizon with their latest progeny ''Grindvirus'' where they have dropped the usage of pitch shifted gurgles. Yes! The sonic assaults on the new album rely heavily upon deep growled vocals in-synced perfectly with high pitched snarls and shrieks. The vocal attack is so abrupt and fluent that you wouldn't even consider the absence of the vomited gurgles which we love so dearly. While speaking of the instrumentation, these guys have been able to create their tightest and most subtle record till date in my opinion. Everything on the album sounds spot on there is hardly a dull moment.
Taking their trademark grooves forward and incorporating more frenetic blasts than before, Squash Bowels have managed to create a mammoth offspring in Grindvirus. Andrez and Artur's individual string attacks have been merciless and insane. The bassline is pretty audible and it works great with the oozing riffage. Carrying forth their trademark style, they have dexterously raised their musical fundamentals to a newer height. Speed hasn't been given away for spontaniety and the instrumental carnage has been dutifully arranged into a proliferating splendor. Even the production is very thick and heavy which plays a prominent factor in making the 28 minutes of pandemonium so enjoyable.

Its great to see that a band like Squash Bowels isn't afraid of doing some experimentations even after being firmly footed in the grindcore underground and are still getting better with each release. Its a quality possessed by a few bands and its a stern exemplary of the fact that grindcore is still alive and kicking butts. And after playing this menacing record repeatedly and devotedly, I can firmly declare that it has to be one of the best grind albums been released in a long while and would be stuck on my music player for a good amount of time.

A good advise for all the maniacal grindfreaks:
If you like your grind crunchy and chaotic, then come up, join the fun and spread this terrific virus- The virus of true grindcore.

Dismembering Asia!

Hello sickos!
I am feeling extremely proud to announce that Indian gore assassins Gorified and Gutslit would be sharing stage with American one man brutal death metal machine Putrid Pile along with other Asian brutal death metal, goregrind and grindcore acts and would be playing in Malaysia and Thailand respectively.

DISMEMBERING ASIA FEST, 7th March 2010

GORIFIED

Gorified was formed way back in September 2004 when 3 individuals decided to uplift the Indian metal getting sick of the scene/core plague by playing some unadulterated death/goregrind influenced with the likes of Cannibal Corpse, Carcass, Dying Fetus, Cryptopsy, Suffocation, Disgorge(U.S/MEX),Deeds of Flesh,Devourment, Foetopsy, Mortician, Impetigo, Autopsy, Napalm Death, Brutal Truth and tons of other influential brutal death metal, grind/gore and death/grind bands. They started creating tremors in the Indian scene soon after their inception and started playing local gigs in Bangalore. The turning point of the band came in 2006 when the mighty Sevared Records decided to release their first demo Ruptured in Seconds. The band is also a formidable part of the underground movement of Bangalore along with a few other dedicated goremongers who host this extreme event called as ''The Undergrind Fest''  which unleashes a total putrid assault, featuring the sickest underground death metal and grindcore bands from Bangalore.

The Dismembering Asia Festival is another milestone in the band's career which should certainly give the best platform to their talent; a place which they certainly deserve.
Check them out on their Myspace -

GUTSLIT

Gutslit is a deathgrind band from Mumbai which came into existence in November 2007. It technically is a three piece band and the trio decided to form the most sick, brutal and heavy as fuck music in India. But with scarcity of drummers who are willing or able to play deathgrind in india it was decided that drummers would be taken into the Gutslit camp only if they find someone suitable. So the band was using a drum machine for gigs till november 2008.
They released a split with French goregrinders Pulmonary Fibrosis last February on Cataleptic Remain Records entitled as ''Contorted Mutilation''.
The band finally got a human drummer in Abhishek Nandi who has now become a formidable part of their line-up and ready to take the gore assault to a newer height.

And now the band has finally going to represent Indian sickness on an international level with a feature in the ''Return of the Dead Massacre 2010'', Bangkok being presented my Sick Chainsaw Productions with great support from Sevared Records and Jackson Guitars. The band would be sharing stage with Putrid Pile and other Asian underground acts like Lacerate, Intricated and Calamitous.

Vomit The Soul - Apostles Of Inexpression

Full Length, July 2009
Unique Leader Records

Italian Brutal Death Metal trio Vomit the Soul have returned with their latest offering ''Apostles of Inexpression'' which is the band's second full length. They shot into the Italian underground almost a decade back but got attention only after their debut full length in 2005 which was entitled as ''Portraits of Inhuman Abomination''.
After hearing their name for the first time, you'd be reminded of the Cannibal Corpse song from ''Butchered at Birth'' but don't let the name decieve you. Albeit the band was highly influenced by the Floridian pioneers during their earlier days, there is certainly no CC worship going on here but a purely 'slamtastic' performance on AOI which is capable of blowing away your brain into disintegrated fragments.

The 35 minutes juggernaut unleashes 8 tracks oozing with groovy slams and razor sharp technical riffage. The production is sharp, crispy and provides a great substance to the band's compositional skills. The recording was finished way back in April/May 2008 at the 16th Cellar Studios in Rome but it was able to see the light of day only a year after when the band inked a 2 disc deal with American giants Unique Leader records. The cover art done by Marco Hassman also stands apart as a stellar exemplary of splendid graphic imagery.

Speaking of the musicianship being executed on the album, there is a well improved and proficient display of brutal mechanism. The band has certainly raised the bar from their earlier full length and has been able to pull off a more aggressive and vehement performance. Its not very often that you hear a brutal death metal album carrying all ingredients to make it taste spicier and jucier than ever but Apostles of Inexpression is definitely a record which satisfies the urge of BDM maniacs.
The vocals are your average down tuned, exhaled gutturals slightly in vein of Dying Fetus although more throaty and deep, occasional grunts and some nicely executed high pitched squeals. The riffs written by Max (who also handles the vocals) are spectacularly catchy and extravagantly heavy. Being the sole guitarist in the band, his credibility has to be certainly applauded since managing both the lead and rythm sections single handedly and still being able to make such ominous and catchy grooves is certainly not a cakewalk. His guitar armoury relies heavily upon dissonant tremelo picked riffs and efficiently palm muted riffage.

Maurizio has been a beast behind the drum kit providing the spontaniety which this album highly boasts off. Graciously timed blast beats, grooves and double bass sections prodive aptness to the striking riffage. The recording done at 16th Stellar Studios also deserve a special mention behind the percussive efficiencies since the snare and cymbals sound very sonorous and manage not be yet another ''tin can'' drum sound which many of the brutal death metal/goregrind albums possess.

But one of the biggest highlights of this album according to me has to be Andrea's extravagantly rich bass lines! Holy shit! I can't remember the last time I heard a death metal album having such a munching bass line. The bass flows unconstrainedly along with the riffs throughout the album and it gives an orgasmic pleasure whenever I sit down and play this record.
Its quite interesting to see how all the three departments have been able to make a healthy accord with each other and have been able to give a monstrous output. Vomit the Soul have been able to fuse technicality with a straightforward genre like Slam quite suavely and managed to be not just another medicore band whose attempts at experimentation failed miserably and thats the point where I'd like to give them maximum marks.

So, if you still haven't heard this amazing album, then curse yourself for being extremely sluggish and try to give it a listen as soon as you can! I am sure that it'd leave you basking with extacy and your neighbours fuming with angst.

P.S - Emo kids beware! Vomit the Soul are coming to hack you into pieces and mince in a meatgrinder. (Grins ghoulishly!)

Best songs - Overcrowd, Self Perception Veil and Prototypes of Value Incarnation

Final rating - 9/10

Lunar Aurora - Andacht

I don't remember many Black Metal albums I heard which carried a dense and mystifying atmosphere as this one. This is definitely one of the most eerie sounding albums out there and that's what makes Lunar Aurora a cut above your average Black Metal bands. Andacht is a musical masterpiece which grows on you after each listen. It's one of the few ''love at first listen'' albums in my opinion. You can never get tired of it. It's a sad thing that they are on hold now and the future of Lunar Aurora looks pretty dubious. But what they have left behind them is certainly going to get the band accolades in the future as well. Their musical prowess really justifies their name. Lunar Aurora : ''The aura of the Moon''. The cold and melancholic atmosphere takes the listener to an unending dark celestial voyage.

The album contains 6 Intense tracks which captivates the listener almost till an hour. The guitar and drum onslaught on this album is absolutely rapturous. Pummeling tremolo picked riffs and nefarious shrieks and howls define the somber mood of Andacht. But the biggest highlight of this release are the bizarre Keyboard passages and sound effects which are instrumental in creating a desolate atmosphere and sorrowful mood which is the real strength of this musical masterpiece. The opening track ''Gluck'' is an absolute majestic exemplification of the unique songwriting capability of Aran and Co. With amazing Spoken vocals, beautiful acoustic interludes and chorus this song has been deftly etched in my memories. The sound effects used were something i never heard! The way they have been intertwined with the music is just incredible and gives me goose pimples on each listen. Geisterschiff begins with a amazing sample which resembles the sound of calm sea waves and fades into the riffs pretty soon. A euphoric ambience supports the riffs which makes this song an exquisite one. Lunar Aurora's ability to maintain the smooth flow of their instruments is far beyond belief. The next tracks ''Dunkler Mann'', ''Finlding'' and ''Der Pakt'' are full of culminating samples and dense atmosphere. What makes these songs so special is the amazing variance used in the vocal department. The clean spoken vocals sound almost godly! Probably the next best i heard apart from Lykathea Aflame's epic album ''Elvenfris''.

It's really hard to believe that a drum machine was used in this album because they sound so natural and precise. Blast beats have been executed in full glory which are totally in-sync with the incredible and herculean riffage. Various tempo changes and transitions depict the mighty grandeur of this album. Another striking highlight is the flawless production. But It's definitely not ''polished''. A good production is quintessential for a band like Lunar Aurora whose music depends mostly on the atmosphere otherwise it'd sound too dissonant. When it comes to bands like Lunar Aurora, Verdunkeln, Darkspace etc, it's the atmosphere which matters the most!

Overall, this release is capable enough to make it to the list of one of the best albums ever released in this genre. This is not simply music but a heavy slab of emotions. It takes oneself into the abysmal depths of solitude and anguish. This subtle skill of Lunar Aurora make them as the connoisseurs of desolation. If you are a fan of black metal, then i see no reason as to why this album shouldn't be a part of your collection. So, if you truly yearn to drown in a pool of melancholy then do yourselves a favour and listen to Andacht and other mighty releases by Lunar Aurora. I am sure that you'll be more than satisfied. It can't get as mysterious and perfect as this one.

Benediction - Transcend the Rubicon

Photobucket

In the genre of Old School Death Metal, the American and Swedish bands dominated the scene in the prime years of the Death Metal era. But with Transcend the Rubicon, British band Benediction brought in a new sound that would make this band be counted among the best. The album is not machine gun fast, like what most other bands released at that time, but consists of mid-tempo, well-structured songs with enough aggression to satisfy. The riffs are fresh, with a strong 80's Thrash Metal vibe, and are well complemented by the crisp guitar tone of the two guitarists Darren Brooks and Peter Rew. TTR has a very heavy rhythm section with thick basslines which ensures that many heads will bang. Drummer Ian Treacy does a fantastic job with his amazing stick-work and double bass rolls. Dave Ingram's growls fit in very well which lend a fuller sound, although his vocals very closely resemble that of Benediction's previous vocalist, Mark 'Barney' Greenway who left the band to join Napalm Death. Lyrics of the songs deal with suffering and introspection, unlike the more popular blasphemous and gore-drenched themes followed by other bands in the genre. The highlight of the album is it's production. It's raw and it's bloody fantastic! Add to that some killer album artwork by master artist Dan Seagrave, and you have one hell of an OSDM album!

Interview with Diego and Mariano of Septycal Gorge

ID: First of all, Congratulations on your latest album ''Erase the Insignificant''. Its an album for which I had been waiting to hear since quite a while now and I must admit that I was completely ripped apart by it's sheer brilliance. Can you tell me about the writing process of this album and the approximate time consumed to record it?

Marius: Cheers, man, thanks for the nice words!! We started working on new songs just few months after "Growing Seeds Of Decay" went out - so Autumn '06 -; we finished our songwriting at the beginning of 2009: as you can see, it's been a long pregnancy, lol, but necessary, because we had some line up changes and we gave our best in every song. Also the period of the recording sessions was almost long: maybe 3 months; we recorded at Dave's (our drummer) home studio and everyone went there recording everytime he had enough time - in that period (May-July '09) our private lives were really busy and don't forget everyone of us is pretty far from Dave's house...

ID: Septycal Gorge's debut album ''Growing Seeds of Decay'' got rave reviews and appraisal for the top-notch musicianship and sickness. How would you compare your latest album with the first one? What all changes did the band undergo while writing it?

Diego:The new album is for us a huge step up. We have a new drummer, Brutal Dave who is a really talented artist and brought us lots of speed and tightness in snare and kick above all, and also the new bass player Clod took his talent and unique sound to complete SG skills. The new songs are more structured and arranged, more technical but still keeping the “SG trademark” of our personal sound.

Marius: I think the influences are still the same, but there are many different musicians (Diego - gtr - and me are the only "survivors" from the first album) and I think that's been fundamental for "Erase The Insignificant", because developing our sounds, tastes, ideas, technical capacities passed also through the possibilities/abilities which every musician in the band could give.

ID: Erase the Insignificant was released on Permeated Records which is a change from your earlier label Mutilated Records. Can I know the reason behind this label change?

Marius: I have good memories of the period under Mutilated Records: when "Growing.." went out, it was a label which re-started its activities after years and years of forced stop... Mutilated Recs helped us and the success of "Growing.." helped both them and us: we're so grateful to Diego Cardozo – Mutilated Recs manager – and all the possibilities he gave us in our first years officially passed in the brutal death worldwide scene! By the way, as in music, as in promotion, our goal's always been aiming the highest possible, and well, the contract with Permeated Records, of course, is something more and I hope everything's going to be better also for us.

Diego:The label change was so natural and easy cause we felt, after the first album appreciations, that we need a new label for a greater promotion and more exposure and we knew that with Permeated records we were going to get them. Anyway we have only to say a big thank you to Diego and Mutilated to have believed in us at the very beginning, when we was a bunch of newcomers and our sound was so immature. Mutilated helped spreading Septycal Gorge name in the whole death metal scene around the world, so it’s the best thing a young band can get form his debut label.

ID: The artwork for the new album has been done by Marco Hasmann who has done a great job like always. But the cover art for Growing Seeds was done by Tony Koehl. Why was the artist changed? Is it because of a personal choice or the change in label forced you to do so since Tony does a lot of artwork for Mutilated Records.

Marius: Well, you're right: Tony Koehl used to collaborate a lot with Mutilated Records, but that's not the reason we changed cover-artist... He's a specialist with gory and spatter scenarios, and we asked him for something different, something more apocalyptic in the vein of early Suffocation… and he made a good job, we’re so satisfied about “Growing Seeds..” cover artwork! By the way, fundamentally, we simply wanted to change; we personally know Marco Hasmann, he is a good friend with the band and a fresh artist and made an awesome job.

ID: Septycal Gorge underwent a lot of line-up changes since the very beginning. The more recent ones being the departure of Maurizio Lucà (bass) and Davide Boeri (drums). What were the reasons behind this?

Marius: Maurizio and Davide are still good friends of us - particularly Maurizio; they left just because they were fed up of playing this kind of music and admitted they didn't have enough capacities to follow the rhythms and the technical developments of the band.

Diego:It’s all about personal and musical reasons, as Marius says. Everyone has his own history and musical tastes, and these cannot affect the friendship. We left with the old members always in a good way.

ID: You guys played in The Mountains of Death festival at Switzerland earlier this year sharing stage with some of the sickest bands on this planet. How was the experience while playing at such a big event?

Marius: In 2009 MOD definitely has been the greatest event for death metal, in Europe and of course it's been a great experience for everyone of us! It rained all time but luckily... after our show, eheheh! And well, speaking/seeing on stage with people like Jon Zig, Ricky Myers, AJ Magana, Mike Majewski... has been a great emotion!

Diego: Playing at MOD is a big feeling cause it’s one of the best European death metal fest! We enjoyed it so much. The only problem was the weather, but at MOD you can overlook it, cause the atmosphere is always great. Lots of friends and great music.

ID: Share some of the best and worst live experiences Septycal Gorge has ever had.

Marius: Neurotic DeathFest 2007 with the old line up: maybe the sickest show we made with Davide Boeri and Maurizio Lucà. With the new line up we don't have enough live experiences, but I think our release party (21st November, in our zone) and the gig in London we made few days ago (we toured UK from 10th to 13th December) have been the best shows. Freaky partecipation of the audience, nice exibition on stage, definitely we had a great time!

Speaking about the worst… well, bad performances happen and happened and probably will happen! I’m pretty sure the worst gig was at the beginning of 2008, the last concert of our drummer Davide Boeri: we were playing in Germany, we were really hard partying, lol, and everyone of us was pretty drunk… That’s probably the worst concert we made; all the drum patterns were wrong, lots of mistakes for the guitarists, my vocals were a sort of guttural freestyle! Shameful… but people over there was crazy – and also really drunk! So none seemed noticing it… there’s also a video of that night someone uploaded on YouTube, try to find it and have a laugh!

ID: Tell us about your band's upcoming events.

Marius: At the moment we're planning some gigs for the next years; they'll be lots of dates abroad, almost none in Italy - and, honestly, I think it's better! The news making me really happy is we're going to perform at Neurotic DeathFest 2010 with Dying Fetus, Origin, Beneath The Massacre, Napalm Death, Immolation and many more!!

ID: What do you guys do apart from playing brutal death metal? And how has playing this extreme and ugly form of music affected your lives?

Marius: Playing this music is a vent, as art is in all its forms. By the way, as you can imagine, when you play about 20-30 underground gigs every year, it's not that easy ruling private life... If you have some private problems with your family, they risk to get bigger, also with friends/girlfriends... by the way these situations are fundamental to leave us attached to reality, if you know what I mean... Playing in cool situations, have gigs all around is fucking amazing, it's a sort of drug and you risk to forget all days reality: luckily we have common lives, without people considering us members of Septycal Gorge, but students, common workers, sons, boyfriends, stupid and useless friends, AH!

Diego: Death Metal is simply part of my life and cannot be detached to it. Music is a passion and not a work, so it will always be, cause it’s an important way to self expression.

ID: A lot of so-called puritans today detest the modern ''ultra brutal/slam brutal death metal'' and label it as ''trendy'' and ''talentless''. What are your views regarding this criticism?

Marius: Personally, I think that's not a question of "trendy" or "catchy" or what else... Fundamentally and generally, there are two categories of music: good and bad... Nothing more to add about that, except the fact I think real brutal death metal can’t be considered “trendy”: it’s ages it survives to every kind of trend, because it survives in a sort of musical ghetto; for me it’s easy noticing this feeling of exclusion from every (new or old) trend: here in Italy, the 99% of people saying they listen to metal/hardcore/extreme music only knows and supports mainstream bands; there are also some zones – like the one where Septycal Gorge were born – where it’s hard finding someone listening to Metallica (and I hate Metallica…)! By the way, my experience taught me that, when the music is trendy, it sucks…

Diego: I personally don’t like at all slam bands, it’s not my cup of tea. I prefer bands like Deeds of Flesh Inveracity etc. Don’t know really if slam is trendy or not, anyway there are lot of shitty bands out there and few that are really really good.

ID: Tell me 5 albums which you have been spinning very frequently these days.

Marius: Terrordrome "Vehement Convulsion", Vomit The Soul “Apostles Of Inexpression”, Skinless “From Sacrifice To Survival”, Gatekeepaz "Dietro il Cancello" (Italian hip hop, uhuhuh!), Disgorge (US) "She Lay Gutted".

Diego: Morbid Angel “Covenant”, Deeds OF Flesh “Mark Of the legion”, Alice In Chains Black “Gives way to Blue”, Insidious Decrepancy “Extirpating…” Soundgarden “Superunknown”

ID: Which bands do you consider as an integral influence on the music of Septycal Gorge?

Marius: I'm sure our guitarist and founder member Diego would answer Deeds Of Flesh; by the way, personally, I've always felt the smell of Suffocation... By the way, all the technical Californian bands which Unique Leader Recs put under contract at its beginning are our fundamental influences.

Diego: Marius is true. For me my main musical influence in writing and conceiving music is DoF. A platter as “Reduced…” and “Path…” are the bible for me. Also Suffocation of course that are the masters of this style.

ID: Thanks a lot for spending some crucial time out of your tight schedule and answering this questionnaire. I wish all the very best for your new album and hope to see Septycal Gorge crushing the emo kids more barbarically than ever. Horns up for Italiano brutality! Take care guys.

Marius: Thank you so much, Ankit!! Sorry for the late answers, but during these last days we've been really busy! Support your own local scene, underground's fundamental for developing this music worldwide! Cheers! Have fun, have a great 2010!

Diego: thanx a lot for your friendship and support man! And for this interview of course! Wish you the best for your work.
